In Summer 2012, we launched our first app into the App Store, beginning our mission to empower teachers and help students become more engaged readers. With insights and feedback from thousands of talented educators – many of whom have been using the app since the very beginning – Subtext has evolved from a simple reading tool into the first e-reading program designed specifically for 21st century instruction. A year ago, we joined the team at Renaissance Learning because they share a similar mission – to accelerate learning for all.

Since we joined Renaissance, we’ve been continuing to improve Subtext (same faces, same team!), most recently with our new 4.0 release. We are deeply committed to making your Subtext experience the best it can be, that is why a year ago we began offering premium upgrades within the app.  After carefully monitoring how premium was received last year, we have now decided Subtext will become an entirely premium app beginning July 2015.

One of our biggest priorities was to announce this decision as soon as possible, making sure we give you ample time to get your teams and students ready for this change. To help minimize disruptions, you’ll continue to have access to the free version of Subtext for the entire 2014-2015 school year. On July 1, 2015, we’ll release an all-premium version of Subtext, and you’ll need a Renaissance-issued login. [Don’t worry, your Google login and old class work will be connected once you login].

The new, premium-only Subtext app will cost $3 per student per year, the same price as the premium upgrades currently available in the app today.

We know you might have a lot of questions: How does this impact licenses you’ve already bought for this year? (It doesn’t.)  Will your Google accounts and class work be saved if you purchase? (They will.) What about the web? You can find answers to these questions and more in our FAQ but as always, we’re also here to answer your questions and listen to your feature suggestions and concerns anytime.

We are committed to continuing to make Subtext the best it can be, so your decision to upgrade to premium is an easy one to justify within your school.  We’re so excited to see how you use Subtext in your classrooms this year. Thanks for all of your support and for everything you do!

All the best,

Heidi, Natalie & the Subtext Team
